Here's the year-end international stats update, at least on the men's side of things. No big surprises: the top three as as you'd probably expect after NZ had a good autumn, and England ran into a too-good Kangaroos team. Ranks 4-6 are all very close, with Fiji not far away. After that, it's very much second tier nations, and Netherlands continue to stand out from the continental European teams. #rugbyleague

And here are the women's international Elo ratings. Obviously Australia and NZ way ahead of the rest here where many nations are in the development phase. Nigeria looking to keep moving up as they hit the top ten, although Fiji are only below them due to the adjustment for a small number of matches played so far. #rugbyleague

#Altrincham may these days be more famous for their eternally unrelegatable (ish) football team, but their rugby team formed ten years earlier, and in their twentieth year decided to start paying their players, and joined the NRFU. Trouble is, it's tough in the pro ranks. They only managed one win all season, and failed to get elected to the centralised division 2 in the following season. Their subsequent history is obscure, and possibly quite short. #rugbyleague

@kpfssport Oh, this strongly-rumoured plan to expand SL to 14 teams with artificial promotion, piss off the French teams, and scupper any chance of NRL investment, all because the loop fixtures are silly and they maybe disagree with the whole IMG schtick (I've no idea where they stand on that to be honest). 1/2

An aside to recent analysis; the comparison between the average season-starting Elo ratings of the top 8 teams versus those of the top 20 teams.

From 1895 until the 1980s, the difference was reasonably steady in the range of about 100-150 points. Since that point, arguably 1983, the top 8 teams have trended away from the rest, the difference now being about 250 points.

This indicates that the very best teams stepped away from the rest, possibly especially in the first decade of #SuperLeague.
