i've seen that "venture extremism" theory that says musk and co. want to crash the economy so they can buy it all up. and honestly it's not hard to believe. but the only reason i'm not fully convinced is that doing so would screw over a lot of other very powerful people and companies. like i dont think the US auto industry is just going to be like "ah fuck we had a good run." so i'm leaning towards the explanation that they're doing this because they're genuinely stupid.
