November 5, 2024 at 9:14AM Those who were raised on the notion that there's a cosmic deity who provides salvation from terrible evil often have a "rescue fantasy" wired into their nervous system, making them much more susceptible to the belief that an authoritarian leader here on earth will protect them from perceived evils infiltrating our families and our country.
{A 'rescue fantasy' is a subconscious expectation that someone or something powerful will swoop in to save us from harm.}

It's important to consider how this "rescue fantasy" fosters dependence on external authority for safety, rather than cultivating self-efficacy or critical thinking. This is a psychological vulnerability where an authoritarian leader can become a stand-in for a godlike protector.
Those who come from religious backgrounds that promote submission to an "all powerful god" are primed to trust authority figures who promise moral purity, stability, or protection from perceived threats, without critically evaluating whether these figures genuinely have their best interests at heart.

When I consider both candidates, one fixates on the great "evils" threatening our country, consistently using divisive and violent rhetoric, while the other seeks collaboration and unity.
One activates the rescue fantasy, appealing to fear and dependency on a single powerful figure (himself), while the other acknowledges that meaningful change will require hard work and collective effort from all of us.
One embodies authoritarian control, aiming to consolidate power, while the other emphasizes democratic principles and the shared responsibility of governing together.

This is why I've chosen to support Harris without reservation.
If you're still on the fence, please consider what's giving you pause. An authoritarian leader cannot and will not bring the peace, safety, and prosperity you desire.
Also, if you feel overwhelmed by this election and it's triggering old traumas from being indoctrinated with a Christian nationalist perspective, believe me, I get. But please, don't let that keep you from voting. This moment in time is critical for democracy.
