@chris @feld You 100% are getting ripped off. Levi's quality is not what it used to be. You can get better pairs for that money these days—yes, even without slave labor.

@feld @chris I'd have to do some research but my usual stop to sniff out more eco-conscious brands is goodonyou.eco. Says nothing of quality but it's a starting point.

Cheapest option is, of course, thrifting. Beyond that, Dearborn Denim makes really good stuff. Uniqlo is the evergreen budget option.

Learning about different types of seams will also help you sniff out in a store what is well constructed and what isn't. You can also tell generally if a garment was made in sweatshop conditions if the seams are sloppy, if there are loose threads hanging out everywhere, etc. This is a red flag that the manufacturer doesn't care about build quality.

Checking the materials tag to see if they might be trying to cut corners by unnecesarrily blending in synthetics can help further assessment of overall quality. (Usually not an issue with denim as short-staple cotton is cheap; elastane is often added especially to women's denim—about 2-4%—to help the garment shape to the body and look more flattering.)

Obviously, it's a deeper topic than I can really cover on Mastodon but one worth learning about imo since the industry depends on you, the consumer, to be clueless so they can mark up things arbitrarily and profit off your lack of knowledge.
