Over the last twelve months, I have lost sight of many friends again. In truth, it already started with Corona. Many contacts became fewer, some places disappeared, many things changed. After that, I tried to build new friendships, mostly online. Not because I do not care about life outside the internet, but because I never really arrived in the place where I currently live. I live here, but it does not feel like home. And even my old hometown, which once felt more familiar, has become foreign to me by now.

So digital spaces became important to me. Discord, Steam, the Fediverse, old chat histories, friends lists. For others, maybe these are just programs and profiles. For me, they were often places where connection still seemed possible at all. Places where I met people I wrote with, played with, laughed with, or simply shared time with.

Many of these contacts still mean something to me.

That is exactly why it is so hard when everything becomes quieter. When people are online less often, write less, no longer react, or withdraw from shared spaces. Often, I do not know what is going on. Maybe life is difficult right now. Maybe they lack the strength. Maybe their everyday life has changed. Maybe there is no big decision behind it at all. Maybe it is simply silence spreading.
