hey so just FYI i will be going into surgery real early in the morning tomorrow and probably will be home by like 2pm mountain time. it's a really routine surgery and we don't expect any complications.
we need some kind of way to structure communities that doesn't have load bearing bad actors, which means no one can be load bearing because power can make people act badly even if they aren't problematic before having it
i think we could benefit from a conversation between the fediverse (not just mastodon, i'd also think looking at lemmy) and bluesky about what lessons we both get from community moderation, because there's a lot of overlap in abstract principles but both have a lot of failures to achieve those
i think these should maybe be back channel because a lot of the big names in moderation who can throw their weight around on masto fediblock are already completely out of their gourds with petty forum mod tyranny
the basic question of "how do we deal if one of the big server admins in the fediblock space turns out to be a bad actor, how do we withdraw that trust" and "how do we deal with a major moderation service covering for abuse" are very, very similar
and a lot of it comes down to the way people in communities can be missing stairs, not just in an interpersonal abuse way but in a misuse of power and trust way
mobility aids are tools. you don't need to sustain a certain amount of burn damage from flipping your omelettes with your hands to deserve the spatula.
i basically got a wheelchair just to go for little walks at the zoo and botanical gardens because previously those would knock me out with pain for days at a time. it's really improving my mental health
also not every mobility aid or tool for dealing with disability is a "medical device"! good shoes that keep your feet from hurting? those adjustable walking sticks? a pop socket for your phone to keep you from hurting yourself balancing it on your pinky? all that shit counts
you are constantly surveilled. there are no third places for you to hang out in: you are likely restricted from malls, hours are cut at libraries, cops are fucking everywhere and they hate you.
if you're a kid in the US you have seen the adult world fully abandon your interests in health and safety in every way, from refusing to install air filters in classrooms to refusing to address climate change.
