      The High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell held a phone call yesterday, 28 January, with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to discuss the situation in the Middle East, including very serious allegations against a number of UNRWA staff members. He expressed strong concern over the dramatic humanitarian situation on the ground and reconfirmed to the UN Secretary General that the EU will continue its essential aid to Palestinians in Gaza unabated, as one of the largest donors of aid, and through partner organisations capable of delivering assistance effectively. The role of UNRWA is vital in the current circumstances in Gaza. 2 million people desperately need the aid provided by UNRWA and other UN agencies. He welcomed the swift and decisive measures taken by UNRWA relating to the allegations of involvement of UNRWA staff in the heinous 7 October attacks by launching a thorough investigation with full transparency, showing that the United Nations are giving the issue the importance it deserves. He stressed that if confirmed, those responsible must be held to account and internal controls strengthened accordingly. Ongoing funding commitments by the EU have been implemented and funding has not been suspended. The EU will determine upcoming funding decisions in light of the outcome of the investigation. The High Representative underlined to the UN Secretary General of the EU’s continued commitment to advance its strong partnership with the United Nations and its agencies. They agreed to remain in close touch.

      Hundreds of pages of court documents related to the deceased convicted sex trafficker and financier Jeffrey Epstein have been unsealed. One notable document is a deposition from one of Epstein’s survivors who said Prince Andrew had groped her at Epstein’s Manhattan apartment. The woman also says Epstein talked about former President Bill Clinton: “He said one time that Clinton likes them young, referring to girls.” The deposition also referenced a time when Epstein discussed a possible visit with then-future President Donald Trump in Atlantic City. Other notable names mentioned in the unsealed documents include Michael Jackson, the attorney Alan Dershowitz, the late former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson and the magician David Copperfield. More documents are expected to be unsealed soon.

      Texte rédigé par le collectif La Voie Est Libre Le projet d’autoroute Toulouse Castres, déclaré d'utilité publique par le gouvernement à travers le décret n° 2018 638 du 19 juillet 2018, vise à relier Castres à Toulouse par la construction d'une autoroute de 53 km (A69) entre Castres et Verfeil prolongée par une bretelle de 9 km (A680) rejoignant l A68 (Toulouse-Albi). Il entrainerait l'artificialisation de plus de 366 hectares de terres agricoles et d’espaces naturels. Il a fait l'objet de nombreux avis critiques ou négatifs d'autorités indépendantes dont: - Autorité environnementale, - Commissariat Général à l'Investissement, - Conseil national de la protection de la nature, - ... Et des milliers d'avis négatifs de citoyens lors des enquêtes publiques. Ce projet d'autoroute est inutile. Comme l'a souligné la contre expertise du Commissariat Général à l'Investissement: « la capacité de l'infrastructure proposée reste très largement au dessus des besoins estimés à moyen et long terme [...] les trafics attendus ne dépassent guère les 15.000 véh./jour quand une autoroute à 2x2 voies peut supporter plus de 40.000 véh./jour en conditions normales de circulation » . Le gain de temps est estimé à 20minutes en moyenne par le concessionnaire de l'A69. Cet argument devient irrecevable si l'on considère que la vitesse limite de 130 km/h sera inévitablement amenée à être abaissée dans le futur pour répondre au plan de sobriété énergétique destiné à réduire la consommation d’énergie globale du pays. Ralentir aujourd’hui n’est plus une option! Ce projet d'autoroute est destructeur de l'environnement avec des dommages irréversibles qui ne se compensent pas comme la destruction de 11,7ha de bois (dont des centaines d’arbres centenaires) et de 22ha de zones humides. Comme le constate l’Autorité environnementale: « ce projet routier, initié il y a plusieurs décennies, apparaît anachronique au regard des enjeux et ambitions actuels de sobriété, de réduction des émissions de gaz à effet de serre et de la pollution de l’air, d’arrêt de l’érosion de la biodiversité et de l’artificialisation du territoire et d’évolution des pratiques de mobilité ». Dans le triptyque ERC (Eviter, Réduire, Compenser), Éviter aujourd’hui n’est plus une option. Ce projet d'autoroute est injuste socialement. Sur la base des données fournies par le concessionnaire de l'A69, il s’agissait déjà d'une des autoroutes les plus chères de France. Or ce coût est déjà réévalué et atteindrait à sa mise en service près de 20 € l’aller/retour pénalisant ainsi les déplacements des personnes modestes qui plus est en privatisant une partie des aménagements publics existants aujourd’hui d’usage gratuit (9kms de déviations publiques à Soual et Puylaurens). Pour rappel, lors de l'enquête publique environnementale, la commission d'enquête a émis une réserve sur le coût du péage dans son rapport de Février 2023. Cette réserve, non levée par les 2 préfectures, aurait dû rendre caduque l'autorisation environnementale délivrée en mars 2023. Justice et équité ne sont plus aujourd’hui des options pour réussir la transition écologique. C’est un projet massivement rejeté par les habitants du territoire. 61 % des habitants du Tarn et de la Haute Garonne se déclarent favorables à l'abandon du projet (source sondage IFOP du 19/10/23). Il est également fortement contesté par des scientifiques à la fois locaux et nationaux et issus de toutes les disciplines. Plus de 2.000 scientifiques, dont dix auteurs principaux du GIEC et des représentants de l’IPBES ou du CNPN, ont appelé le président de la République à renoncer à ce projet. Mme Valérie Masson Delmotte, climatologue internationalement respectée, membre du Haut Conseil pour le climat, et dont les prises de position sont rares, a choisi de pas rester silencieuse et de joindre sa voix à la demande d'abandon du projet. Ces scientifiques se prononcent sur la base d’évaluations aux regards du cadre inscrit dans la loi qui vise à diminuer nos émissions de gaz à effet de serre pour limiter les risques climatiques croissants et menaçants et protéger les populations. De plus en plus d'élus se prononcent CONTRE. Répondant à l'appel de l'Association Des Maires du Tarn en Octobre 2023, seuls 25% des élus du département du Tarn se sont déclarés favorables au projet. Pire, sur les 29 communes affectées directement par l'infrastructure, à peine 20% des élus l'approuvent. Sébastien Vincini, président du département de la Haute Garonne également impacté par le projet, appelle l'État à "réinterroger le projet" ! Non, contrairement à ce qui est clamé par les pouvoirs publics et le gouvernement, les élus locaux ne soutiennent absolument pas massivement ce projet. Nous demandons, conformément à l'engagement pris en 2022 par le président de la commission Développement Durable et Aménagement du Territoire, que lorsque cette pétition dépassera les 10.000 signatures elle soit examinée par la dite commission et que des auditions soient organisées pour entendre les scientifiques locaux et nationaux, les acteurs économiques du territoire, les agriculteurs, les associations qui ne cessent de répéter que ce projet est inutile, injuste, écocide, climaticide. Cette autoroute est le symbole de ce que l'on ne peut plus accepter si l'on veut assurer véritablement le changement de nos modes de vie, indispensable pour affronter les enjeux majeurs du XXI ème siècle. Faire autrement n’est plus option.
