20 year olds are underage for alcohol in my state. They are far from being children.

The faulty equation is:

therefore x *always* causes the same bad experience in every single case

Here in the US the definition of "underage" changes when you cross state lines. It is also a very different thing depending on whether you're talking about alcohol, sex, driving, working, voting, joining the military, etc.

People get manipulated by people older and younger than them. They are taken advantage of by people of the same age too. Age is nowhere near the deciding factor here.

After puberty (apx 14+) no one is a child. We used to respect that. Sometime in the late 90s, however, teens got reclassified as children. It is nonsense of course, but everyone in the US seems to believe it. Relegating teens to child status is abusive.

Respecting other people and being tolerant of their choices is sorely lacking in American culture.

It's part of our Puritanism. We all feel we have the right or even the duty to judge others' behavior.

The way we use language shapes the way we think.

Modern culture infantilizes young adults. Concepts like "minor" are used to quietly throw everyone under 18 into a group with small children. This tendency is very harmful.

It is widely believed that adulthood begins at age 25 because that's when we are neurologically fully developed.

But isn't it odd that everyone knows under 25s are children,

yet nobody anywhere has stopped them from working?

I mean, it's child labor. That's patently wrong.

After puberty humans are adults. Normal humans are sexually attracted to normal adults. There is no mystery here. There is no need for special terms for this totally boring concept.
