- most fedi software comes with absolutely no tools for reading your dms. it would take a lot of extra steps in order for them to find your dms.
- they have no interest in reading your dms, nowhere near as much as corporate apps like twitter, discord, tumblr, etc, that can probably read them more easily and maybe automatically. this "issue" is as old as email, fedi admins just have no reason to hide it. the dialogue box shows up so that you understand that it's not perfectly secure.
- if you do need actual secure messaging, federated options include xmpp, which is reliable but very basic*, and matrix which has more features but it breaks all the time and the devs are openly pro-cop. they both suck but it's what we have. signal or telegram are centralized options that support encryption.
*yes i know xmpp "supports" more features, but that's essentially theoretically. there are 0 (zero) client or server projects that actually implement anything more than the basics.
