Started out with the compositions of Hitoshi Sakimoto’s Final Fantasy Tactics, XII this AM and have ended up at Bob Dylan’s Blood on the Tracks. Somehow it all goes back to this Bob Dylan fellow somehow.
Listening to the music of Panzer Dragoon while hearing many Doctor Who adjacent musical moments, yes that’s a good thing. Composer is Saori Kobayashi with unique uses of gamelan/mbira mixed with other unique rhythms and washes of synth.
Excellent techno set via Nina Kraviz and this Yoyaku instore. Listen to more techno, start your Saturday with some like I am. Has an energy like no other.
A Taylor Deupree engineered Blues: The ‘Dark Paintings’ of Mark Rothko by Loren Connors. Gorgeous playing of the guitar that I could never adequately describe. The notes almost float from one into the next.
First stop at the Stone for opening night for Brian Marsella's week. This was a trio with Craig Taborn and Sylvie Courvoisier... Yes, a piano + lots of keys + lots of keys trio. Lots of keys, very little structure. In an only-at-the-Stone kind of way.
Then over for the late Mehldau set at the Vanguard. Holy duck, so damn good. All the structure, flow, and locked-in-ness missing from the first show.
Still Mehldau + Marsella + Taborn + Courvoisier in one night is some top tier pianist action.
I also recommend Sphere Collapser by Stephen O’Malley, Kali Malone and Frederikke Hoffmeier on pipe organ. Big room filling drones that slowly evolve revealing their tales. I enjoy this more than the new Sunn O))) release honestly.
Just did a straight listen through of Daniel Avery’s Tremor & Tremor Midnight Versions, such a trance focused artist in whatever mode he creates. I’d love to experience his full band live. I’ll have to travel to Spain’s Sónar fest this summer to do so. I can dream..
Actress & Suzanne Ciani's Concrete Waves has taken up most of my listening this weekend. It presents two live sets of music one via London's Barbican and another via Barcelona's annual Sonar Fest. Just an incredible melding of soundworlds between two players whose voices meet perfectly. I love it!
Been loving a new DMX Krew recording called No Way to Control It featuring some darker shades of his electro pallet. Darker with a slightly more driving sound overall. Electro is great for storytelling I think and this one has some of that sprinkled liberally throughout. https://dmxkrew.bandcamp.com/album/no-way-to-control-it
Listening to the band Sweet Pill today for the first time. I had no clue they were from Philadelphia but right on to that! Very catchy power pop. Says emo pop but I’m hearing more of a power pop but whatever, on Hopeless records.
Philadelphia ResidentI love music, from AMM to X-Ray Spex and other experimental sonic matter in between. Politics, left-anarchist leaning(s)Sport-Hockey, long struggling #EdmontonOilers fan.
