After a too long hiatus, I'm bringing back some new music recs, trying focus on things off radar, but will mix in some low hanging fruit. I'll bounce around genre, etc as much as possible. See how it goes. Gonna shoot for one album each weekday, but may forget every once in a while.
Not just afrobeat, but the dankesy, darkest afrobeat you'll find. Not happy, let's-dance funky, but more like evil-lurks-within funk. Lots of baritone sax and irresistible groove. This outfit from Leeds always crushes, but this one feels a little extra. Enjoy!
Guitarist/vocalist with an album full of duet pieces with a slew of A-list duo partners. From Chris Thile to Cecile McLorin Salvant and beyond. Lots of different nuances, all tied together with a glowing, warm energy from Lau. You know she's special if she got all those guests for her debut full-Length. Good vibes for the whole fam. Enjoy!
Missed yesterday, but hopefully make up for it with this excellent debut I'm pretty sure isn't on your radar. Instrumental tape-is-rolling studio jams from this new Brooklyn quintet. Focused + exploratory both, I def think you'll dig. I have plans the night of their next gig, thinking hard about changing them! Enjoy!
I discovered this one because Sam Cohen plays on one of the tracks & I kind of love everything he does. Well, he produced the whole album and brings his good stuff to the whole record. But this Swiss songwriter also brings lots of it on her own. Lovely pieces with a nice dose of lush oomph. Fun & wonder. Enjoy!
John Craigie with TK & the Holy Know-Nothings: Pagan Church
Craigie is an excellent folk songwriter with a deep love for Beatles and a witty storyteller's worldview. TK et al are a raw country rock band. Together is about what you'd expect, with excellent + raw results. And if you ever have a chance to see JC live, his banter is A++. Enjoy!
Instrumental trio goes fully dreamlike. Sometimes blissful, sometimes sonic nightmare, in the best ways, of course. This is one to sink deeply into. Enjoy!
The harp is having a moment and, man!, am I here for it. The Welsh Whiting's is a heady slow groove jazz harp and her sound and her band and her compositions are deliciously digestible and head-bobbingly spiritual. This is the good stuff, dig it friends. Enjoy!
Surya Botofasina, Nate Mercereau, Carlos Nino: Subtle Movements
Deep spiritual ambient music of the highest order. Sounds to inspire, to free your mind, to bring the chill when it's needed most. Deep breaths, friends. Enjoy.
This Amsterdam band used to be pure afrobeat but have slowly morphed into an electrogroove band with some smarts and depth. Their latest is a 25 minute EP that finds them fully transformed, kicking ass as always, but in a much different place than where they started. Every track has something to say, so listen up. Enjoy!
Sometimes feels like there's no one doing just straight kick-ass rock and roll no more. Well, this Atlanta trio kicks ass, rocks, straight fire. Dense with the riffs, intelligent, but straight-up. Omni has always been radar-worthy, but this is their best. This is rock & roll circa 2024, it's pretty damn great. Enjoy!
Feel like I never hear anyone talking about Weaver, but all she does is put out bangers. Her sound has matured and evolved, but it's still a deliciously dreamy mix of romance and intrigue, deeply interesting electropop. This may be my favorite release of the year so far. Enjoy!
As far as I can tell this is the project of drummer Lucien Chatin, who backs Brit folkies like This is the Kit & Rozi Plain. Both of those show up to sing (and their sonic presence is felt throughout), but each track is like a different scene from a singular dream. Always interesting when you get the drummer's creative vision and this doesn't disappoint. Enjoy!
Normally don't do archival releases or generally on-your-radar shit, but appropriate for today, in case you missed this or need a relisten, this is some raw, single-guitar Allmans that is a must-listen rare stopgap in ABB (and Dickey Betts) history. Enjoy!
When you just listen to anything that anyone recommends yes, you get some crap, but you also get to discover shit like this killer instrumental music from Russia (!?). Deep grooves with a smart exploratory spirit. Kinda? Lots to love here. Enjoy!
New Elephant9! If you dig Medeski Martin & Wood, and wouldn't mind a little more Keith Emerson in the mix, Elephant9 just might be right for you. They continue their climb towards keys trio jazzrockjam perfection. These guys crush every time. Enjoy!
This is one of those bands I feel like probably should be bigger. But they can be our secret if you want. Nashville duo that's kind of the all killer, no filler of their hometown. Great songs, catchy riffs, a tinge of country, but mostly just a killer folky rock. Their whole catalog is keepers, but start with their latest and go from there. Enjoy!
I love me some Eurojams, and this Swedish band brings em right good. This started life as a movie soundtrack that lingered for a bit, but the en's result is quite wonderful. As if the band took all the flute interludes from Gabriel-era Genesis and built an album around them. Sort of? Psychprog magic. Enjoy!
Fell in love with Nenni & her last release, largely the perfect slice of classic country that is the song "In the Mornin'." I was excited for her newest & it doesn't disappoint. Any country fan should get familiar with Nenni: a comfy oldschool sound, with great songwriting & an excellent backing band. Enjoy!
Criminally under-the-radar folkie from Toronto. Her latest is more masterful songwriting with her characteristic haunting quiet. She's knows her way around a great lyric and a lovely melody. (and playing in NYC Thursday). Enjoy!
