a warning label on big social platforms is appropriate of course. but it won’t solve the root of the problem, which is that Meta and the rest use their obsessions with growth and endless profit as an interface design guide for induced engagement. until we decouple online sociality from the profit motive, we’ll need a lot more than warning labels.

OpenAI duping Scarlet Johansson’s Samantha voice from Her is not only telling about Sam Altman’s unethical business practices and his dismissal of consent, but also confirms the company’s intentions to use any means necessary (e.g., a voice already coded as AI girlfriend) to pump engagement to infinity.
