      HOW GERMANY FINANCED PUTIN’S WAR. I recently read this book, which is very popular in Germany right now: How Germany financed Putin’s war. What I read there only confirmed what I already knew and said many times. Germany paid Russia €104 billion, and in the end this money helped to fund the war against Ukraine. This was possible because of many years of gas buying and a dependency built around Nord Stream. This post is about how a state became a convenient cash machine for the Kremlin. For Putin, pipelines were never only about trade. They are levers. The gas price is not set by “the market”, but by the Kremlin’s political mood. For “friendly” countries it is cheaper, for “unfriendly” countries it is much more expensive. And if needed, Russia can simply switch off the gas in the middle of winter. That is how a natural resource becomes a weapon. Ukraine felt this earlier than anyone. After the Orange Revolution, Russia sharply raised the price, stopped supplies, accused Ukraine of “stealing gas”, and then in 2009 it blocked transit to part of Europe too. After the occupation of Crimea, the price for Ukraine went up even more, like a punishment for not obeying. And this is where Nord Stream appears as a geopolitical project. Its goal was not to “add more gas to Europe”, but to bypass Ukraine, take away our transit role, our money, and a key barrier that could stop a big war. Poland and the Baltic states warned about this. It was obvious, because routes already existed through Ukraine, Moldova, and Belarus. The new route under the Baltic Sea was not needed for the economy.
