… @bkuhn & @richardfontana were involved with GPLv3 Drafting Committees. We learned much from what was done right and (frankly) what was done wrong in drafting GPLv3.

@richardfontana was prescient w/ copyleft-next — taking lessons learned from the GPLv3 process and doing copyleft license drafting better.

What @richardfontana began — almost exactly 13 years ago — as an experimental hobby, we relaunch today as a serious and professional effort to create the next generation of copyleft license. …

… we are also pleased to announce that Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC) has agreed to provide system resources to host our website, mailing list, and Forgejo instance for copyleft-next.

A gracious volunteer years ago donated to @bkuhn the domain name “copyleft.org” as a place to host work to advance copyleft. We're excited to host all these new resources in that domain name. The beginnings of a new website are now live on https://next.copyleft.org/. …

T8 was raised at 14:20 HKT yesterday, meaning most services are suspended. A few restaurants are staying open. During lunch all restaurants were chock full with people taking a last chance at eating out before almost everything closed.

Where I am it was windy but nothing extreme. Waves were high but calm down by the waterfront. A few hours later in the evening it was less windy, waves had increased in frequency, but were not higher.

Some restaurants and other shops near the water, including a gift shop in Ocean Park, had their doors and windows broken or broken open by sea waves, and the insides flooded.

The "good" people at Emerson for some reason couldn't think for themselves when I responded to them on behalf of #curl and instead continue and send the same questions to the #libssh2 project with the same "demands".

"This is a gentle reminder regarding our earlier request for your input on the cybersecurity risk assessment of the software component “libssh2” version 1.11.0, as part of our compliance efforts with the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA)."

A profile on EJAE from last year:

Two stand-out tracks are Red Velvet’s “Psycho,” which became a massive hit in South Korea and internationally, and Taeyeon‘s “Sorrow.”

[ . . . ] Three years later, the Red Velvet track still holds the record for most streams on Spotify US among SM artists, and it even is eligible for an RIAA gold certification with 500,000 units sold in the States.

Awesome! This is the first time I hear of PEP 723.

I first heard of uv and uvx a few months ago, and now I use uvx every day, explicitly or implicitly.

A longer article on uv, PEP 723 and scripts with embedded dependency specifications:

So, re: LLMs and the "jury is out on energy usage", I just want to point out a couple of historical things.

When studies came out linking smoking to increased risk of cancer, the Tobacco industry paid for and produced studies that said "nuh uh".

When Obesity and heart disease rates increased in the United States and the problem was linked to sugar intake, the sugar industry produced studies saying it was fats.

If you think the US needs to ban TikTok because the Chinese government can run influence ops on it, just wait until you find out how easy it is to influence ops on platforms YOU DON'T EVEN OWN--even wholesome American platforms like our beloved Facebook.

There are 20,000+ Mastodon servers alone. Thousands of WordPress and Pixelfed servers.

The idea that the Fediverse is about connecting 5-6 servers, one for each kind of data posted, is really misleading.

Thank you @steve so much for keeping Chirp up and running!

After fragdev and loadaverage went down the other year, yours is now the oldest still running GNU Social I'm aware of except for rainbowdash.net, and that one is highly customized and has search protected from outsiders.

I have been looking for sites that would contain posts from some of my old fedi accounts, and today I discovered that you're holding pretty complete records for two of them. 🤩

This is a fantastic read. A look behind the scenes of the creation of the Common Lisp standard and the HyperSpec: The aims, forces, struggles, personalities and random events that caused it to be what it is.

It's a written version of a talk given by Kent Pitman, the main editor of the standard, at Lisp50@OOPSLA at OOPSA 2008:

One very cool, very normal thing that non-war-criminals do is threaten collective punishment in retaliation for potential indictments on human rights violations
