@bmacDonald94 I think if the “founding fathers” were alive today and called out what’s happening, they’d be ridiculed, called woke leftist radicals, and turned into memes. Or they’d be the subject of some conspiracy theory that it’s not really them but some AI bot or leftist hacker or whatever.
@zer0unplanned@bmacDonald94@duncan_blues you’re grossly over-simplifying a very complex decision space - which conveniently makes it easy for you to criticize others instead of understand or empathize with
@bmacDonald94@duncan_blues everyone is going to have different calculus and variables, my point was more it’s not as simple as resist or don’t have the energy. Regardless of how people are making those decisions, we need to be understanding of the differing circumstances, calculus, variables, etc that you likely don’t see.
If you think only the US is waxing extreme, you’re probably not paying attention to what’s happening in your own democracies. The same forces are at work everywhere trying to erode thriving democracies. And it’s been working.
I’m presently wasting enough of Chase’s time on a matter that I’m costing them more money than they’re trying to get out of me. Feeling good about my passive-aggressive resistance tactics right now.
@inthehands@cazencott I do an activity with my class to develop our class policy on use of AI. Every time, about half say they refuse to use them (for various reasons). The rest are either skeptical or feel they do t have time to even worry about it. Excessive use seems to be very limited in scope.
Overall, I’m more tired from dealing with all the hype than any actual student behavior with it.
So I learned that yesterday, a cop tried to sucker punch my oldest. The cop missed. My oldest had participated in a gathering commemorating their campus’s encampment to protest the Gaza genocide. The (weak sauce, pansy) university president called in cops to monitor the peaceful gathering. I guess they got bored because it was peaceful and decided to arrest a student for carrying a sign. As they hauled that student to a van, my son and others walked alongside and some cop tried to swing at him.
@alex First and foremost, I’m talking with them to make sure they’re aware and have plans. I thought many would be stressed. Instead, most I’ve talked with haven’t been paying attention to the news and didn’t know what was happening. I had to inform them then talk with them about plans.
Our university created a task force and has been holding sessions with faculty and staff (what to do, rights, what to communicate to students, etc.) centered on protecting our community.
I just used the 5calls.org site to identify my local representative and call her to ask her to oppose the proposed budget that would slash critical supports like Medicare and Medicaid. #NewMexico
@GottaLaff the defeatism is tiring and actually feeds the administration’s momentum. I always kinda thought Americans would rather go down fighting. And many are out there fighting - through courts, through protests, through other forms of organizing. Defeatism can be demoralizing to those efforts. We need to be lifting up every avenue of resistance, even if it’s only as moral support.
In the book, One Hundred Years of Solitude, there is a scene toward the end where 5,000 dead bodies are loaded onto a train and taken out of town. Over time people in the village think that number can’t possibly be that high, so the story over time erodes the details. First it’s less than 5,000, then a few hundred, then there were no bodies, then no massacre, then no train.
I’m thinking a lot these days about how fragile memory - and therefore history - really is and wondering what to do. /1
@inthehands I think this is a good example of how we need to shift from reliance solely on legal / logic arguments and engage in more narrative warfare and fight for the Overton window.
My days are a constant mashup of ethics and tech, tea, learning sciences, more tea, some biking, more tea, life with middle school twins, and a search for balance - aiming to live life, not just make it through each day. Lately I’ve been curious about trust and technology - as functions of design, implementation, etc. Big #Tool fan #BikeHighwaysEverywhere #ILoveMyEbike #PocketsForWomen
