how being ND affects my career 🪿

(i always hesitate to self diagnose & refuse to speak for anyone else, but what i can talk about are my symptoms + how it shows up for me personally)

ok so some of yall may remember me smashing a bunch of network equipment with a sledgehammer last year. i did it as a fun way to raise funds for my good friends who had rescued a bunch of puppies & their mama. well, meet Buster. he was found shot in the mouth & unable to eat normally 😞 https://www.gofundme.com/f/give-buster-a-chance-to-live-and-love/

i dont do this often, only for these specific ppl. but they’re raising funds to help with the cost of surgery to get his mouth back to a state where he can eat properly on his own again.

i learned yesterday that Firewalla has a proprietary protocol called VQLAN & from cursory research it sounds like it’s basically VXLAN-lite?? i have a firewalla router but not any of their APs so i can’t get a pcap of it… anyone out there have a pcap or screenshot i could use to compare to VXLAN?

i talk often about space network stuff & the differences between terrestrial networks vs a network designed to blast off into space… but i have never actually designed one! you know who has? my brilliant mentor Eric, who will be doing a talk with me & Patrick Gargano in june at cisco live ☺️

maybe it’s not about being enough

one thing that’s really kind of fucked me up about meeting & interacting with tech influencers is the level of 1) delusions of grandeur about their own importance & 2) the absolute lack of technical skills despite their being considered knowledgeable voices in their field

i am fairly technical but def not the most technical person out there. you can sniff it out pretty easily once you learn to spot the signs.

what disappoints me is that many of these folks’ platforms are largely based on the complete & total illusion that they have any beyond-basic technical knowledge at all

i block & mute ppl for so many different reasons every day. it’s been like this since i hit like 10k on twitter. it’s only just now that some dudes on twitter are starting to get pissed about it. what right does anyone have to my time or attention?

this shit detracts from my desire to ever educate or try again. it’s a never ending loop of “make an educational vid, some asshole makes sexist comments, point out sexist comments on twitter, get sexist hate for pointing that out, get sexist hate for pointing that out, get sexist hate for pointing that out…” on & on & on & on

so maybe i should shut up & do the videos? but even then. even then. i have ppl saying shit like “her jokes aren’t funny,” so I do an educational video & i get “she’s only teaching basic shit, this is useless”. what do you want me to teach you??????

why does it matter so much if im catering solely to you???? why does it matter if i block you???? why does it matter if you comment on my stuff & i don’t respond to you???

multiple men approached me at cisco live & made rude comments about how they couldn’t DM me on twitter bc i don’t follow them. it was so goddamn weird. the entitlement, the creepiness, the lack of self awareness… it’s astounding. i am fucking tired. i need a better mental health strategy

making ppl laugh is by far the best, most motivating factor for me when creating videos etc ♥️ thank y’all for letting me know when that happens. it sure makes my day
