@michaelc unless you feel very tech-inclined and are prepared to take some time to learn things and read wiki pages, choose Ubuntu. I actually recommend the KDE variant though, Kubuntu. It's just as well-supported as Ubuntu.
If that does apply to you however, give Arch a whirl! The wiki pages are must-read
@nina_kali_nina related question: have you tried Nix or Guix? I feel like it might work for maintaining legacy package ecosystems like that. I haven't tried it myself though
@nina_kali_nina I think the shaming into silence part is very accurate (and sad). It's good that you found a way to overcome it!
I think this is tied into the seemingly popular idea that everything you do has to have a goal of making money at some point -- the implication is that aspiring musicians should gain a large audience or stfu. Obviously I disagree with that...
