Happy birthday to brilliant trailblazing US #geologist & prof Florence Bascom (1862-1945) who championed women’s education, & used polarizing microscopes for detailed petrographic analysis to show that rocks previously identified as sedimentary were in fact metamorphosed volcanic rocks she called aporhyolite (implying a change in rhyolite, a silica rich igneous rock, as in her thin sections like the ones in my print). 🧵

Unusually for the time, she was encouraged to pursue university education by her father John, the U Wisconsin president who opened the school to women, & mother, suffragette & women’s rights activist Emma Curtiss Bascom. The 2nd US woman to get a #geology PhD, she had a BA, Bsc & MSc from Wisconsin & glowing letters of recommendation but still had to fight John Hopkins & its founder Gilman who opposed coeducation to admit her, their 1st woman, to the doctoral program. 🧵2/n

She was unhelpfully limited in her library & classroom access to shield her from the “rougher influences” of the young men; in her isolation she decided to focus on #petrology. Her thesis “A Contribution to the Geology of South Mountain, Pennsylvania” is regarded as a major contribution to Appalachian geology & she published it in the 1st volume of Journal of Geology in 1893. She furthered understanding of the east coast of the US & redefined the recognized cycles of erosion in Pennsylvania. 🧵3

She founded the Geology Department at Bryn Mawr in 1895, establishing their mineral collection & becoming a full prof in 1906. A tough but innovative & devoted mentor she trained the next generation of women in geology. She was the 1st woman: hired by the USGS in 1896; elected to the Geological Society of America in 1924; & elected VP of the GSA in 1930. 🧵4/5

This #linocut shows an obstinacy of buffalo in all senses of the words. The collective noun for a group of buffalo is a "obstinacy". Clearly, these are hard-headed beasts. These ones have drawn a line in the sand. I dare you to cross it. Technically, these are American bison (Bison bison), known colloquially in North America as 'buffalo'. These mighty beasts were once obiquitous across the Great Plains. 🧵1/2

Happy birthday to Dolly the sheep 🐑 ! Dolly, the female sheep born 5 July 1996, was a trailblazer. She was the first mammal to be cloned from an adult somatic cell, using the process of nuclear transfer. This print is one of a kind lino cut with chine collé (collaged rainbow of Japanese kozo #washi papers) & the words “Hello Dolly!” in black, on cream coloured Japanese kozo (or mulberry) paper.

Happy birthday to #astronomer Henrietta Swan Leavitt (1868-1921) who set the scale of our Universe. My portrait of Leavitt is printed in silvery lavender ink on Japanese kozo (or mulberry paper). Behind her is a line showing stellar luminosity (capital L with subscript sun-symbol, a circle with a dot) as a function of time (t). She is printed over constellations in gold (Cepheus, Cassiopeia, Draco, 🧵

This regal (poodle) lady was a recent commission. Sometimes people offer you great photos to work from. I was uncertain about how to carve the curly fur, but my client said, “Oh! the curlz!” so I think I got it ☺️

Happy birthday to #physicist Harriet Brooks (1876 - 1933) who discovered atomic recoil, Radon & recognized radioactive elements could undergo chains of transmutations into a series of new elements. #nuclear #physics
She was Rutherford’s 1st grad student at McGill. After publishing her results in 1899 she completed her MSc in 1901 on “Damping of Electrical Oscillations,” before embarking on #radioactivity research. 🧵

June 30 is Asteroid Day to raise awareness of opportunities and risks posed by asteroids, their role in the formation of our solar system, their impact in space resources and importance of protecting Earth from impact. June 30, 1908 an approximately 12-megaton explosion that occurred near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in Yeniseysk Governorate (now Krasnoyarsk Krai), Russia, like due to a meteor air burst due to the explosion of a 50 to 60 m stony asteroid - the Tunguska event. 🧵

A tower of giraffes for #WorldGiraffeDay! Such an apt #termOfVenery for the world’s tallest animal, celebrated on the longest day (in the northern hemisphere - or night in the southern). There are estimated to be only 117,000 remaining in the wild so #conservation efforts are needed to ensure they survive and thrive in the future.

One of my favourite #termsOfVenery prints for #pollinatorWeek:
A kaleidoscope of butterflies!
⠀
There are three each of the orange Isabella’s Longwings (Nymphalidae Eueides isabella), three yellow Eastern tiger swallowtails (Papilio glaucus), and three blue Red-Spotted Purples (Limenitis arthemis astyanax) in this #linocut kaleidoscope.⠀

A group of peacocks, like those in this linocut, are called 'an ostentation', for obvious reasons. I am making a series on the weird and wonderful terms of venery - the collective nouns for groups of animals (and other things). Some are evocative, some strange and obscure. This is the fourth in a series of such prints.
The word 'Ostentation' is in a rather rococo and ostentatious typeface.

For #WorldOceanDay I thought I would share a print with both a vertebrate and invertebrate ocean species. This linocut and gel plate print shows the humpback whale swimming above and a close up of the whale below with six Coronula diadema barnacles.
The Coronula diadema name comes from its barrel and crown-like shape, which can grow to 5 cm (2”) tall and 6 cm (2.4”) in diameter. 🧵

It’s my Improbability of Puffins.
I love this term of venery for puffins (who are indeed improbable looking sea birds). It’s part of my series of prints of groups of animals and the weird and wonderful collective nouns to describe them.
