I am trying to re-create an old talk from ~4 years ago I found in my archives and I simultaneously love past-me (she did such a great job developing a talk structure, much better than the one I had in mind when asked to give a talk on this topic a month ago!) and hate her (she somehow managed to deleted the keynote of the talk so that I am now stuck with a PDF and trying to find all figures & re-type the text ...).
Oooh, is this new? (Rhetorical question - even if it is not new, it seems new to me!) I really like how mastodon (in the version currently running on mastodon.social) explains how blocks work!
P.S. Obviously not blocking this particular account, used it as an example 😅
I love passing by wind turbines. They are such an essential solarpunk element to me. Seeing one feels like a sign of hope: a different future is possible.
Is there a Dutch charity that would help folks who can't afford it with dental care in the Netherlands?
Boosts welcome.
(Yes I googled and did not find one that would be still active. So please refrain from "here is what I googled" results. Obviously not for me, but - for reasons - that's something I want to donate to.)
🌀 And it's just so less than 100 years ago since Hubble, building on Henrietta Swan Leavitt’s period-luminosity relation for Cepheids, has shown that our own Milky Way is just one galaxy among many: ▶️ https://mastodon.social/@mcnees/111681549432325681
Meine wissenschaftliche Karriere (die drauf aufbaut, das ich als Studentin Auslandsaufenthalte habe könnte) wäre mit diesem Staatsbürgerschaftsrecht übrigens nicht möglich:
Typically, the only cosmic things that disturb the "sunny side" of Earth's atmosphere come from our closest star, the Sun.
Except, it turns out, if you get a very bright GRB, the brightest we ever detected. And suddenly a star, exploding 2 billion light-years away (the Sun is just 8 minutes light away!) can - just temporarily, for a few minutes, but still - affect the Earth's ionosphere (and possibly the ozone layer).
Hm, is it possible to search for a link (eg whether someone linked to an article) on #mastodon?
I just tried searching for a link I myself posted and it did not work. I can find the post searching for words it used otherwise, so it's definitely ingested into the search. So I am wondering whether I am missing some important bit of search syntax.
People post because they want to vent, to share their frustration, to make others laugh or shake heads. If ppl post to get advice, they usually ask.
So: You want to give advice?
Has the person explicitly asked for it? No? Then don't.
But you really, really want to give advice! Still: no!
But your advice is really relevant! Still: no.
But you also know the person well (you follow them & they you & you interacted): ask if they want advice. If they don't explicitly say yes - it's still a no.
@Ruth_Mottram@feditips@micron love this! One thing I would add, especially to academics, is to consider enabling search for one's account (assuming that one is on a server that allows that). For being part of a scientific discussion that would be important and one needs at least to be aware that this is a conscious choice here and not automatic.
Today: An amazing hike with a lovely audiotour close to #Bollendorf (Naturpark #Südeifel). Very much recommended although we did have to leave the house shortly after 7 to not hike in the midday heat 🥵
Just ... feel you: on the question, on trying to do my best, on feeling a bit dumb, on needing to see everything through the lens and change, change, change the system inherent choices.
