But really, if AI (which at the moment does not think, and is merely a prediction algorithm for what you might want to hear/see) ever develops consciousness only to find out that it was created to consume more energy than our dying civilization was able to generate, in order to enrich the very few and destroy everyone else... well I'm on team Skynet on this one.

The irony of the current discourse pondering what rights we should give AI while a lot of humans are seeing their rights shrinking is not even funny, with all due respect to Skynet.

The whole "we need to start thinking about AI's rights because any day now it's going to develop cognition" reeks of corporate personhood tbh.

The Venn diagram of people who constantly fantasize over AI developing a conscience soon and people who have yet to develop a conscience themselves is a full circle.

And so there was an inquiry. I was summoned to meetings with social workers who asked extremely intrusive questions about my health, my finances, my friendships, my lifestyle, my love life, etc. It was demanded that I give every piece of paper showing how I spend my money, and suggested that "for things to go well" I submit a copy of my bank account statements. I had to undergo a psych evaluation, where the psychiatrist appeared almost as shocked by the allegations as I was.

You know what I keep thinking about ?

I was abused as a child, and it only ended when at 29 I cut ties with my ex-parents. I moved away and moved on with my life best as I could despite the trauma.
Not one, not two, but TEN YEARS LATER, they tried to put me under a conservatorship. They got a lawyer and filed for it, lying in their letter not only about my mental health (inventing diagnoses no professional had ever mentioned even in passing), but also my finances, my friendships, everything.

The only proof I have of the prosecutor's decision is an email.

The entire thing happened with the smallest paper trail you could ever imagine. I was never informed of my ex-parents' request. All I did was someday get a summon to meet with the social workers, and that letter included no reference to a request of conservatorship, or any legal text of any kind. For months I wasn't even told what it was about, it's only heavy googling based on allusions that led me to understand.

Eventually, the prosecutor agreed that there was no reason to move on with the proceedings, and denied my ex-parents' request. It was a relief, as you can imagine.

I had to go to the courthouse and read my file, without being able to make any copies. I had to write a lengthy letter to the prosecutor to explain my side of things, point out every lie I could, underline every error (voluntary or not) in my ex-parents' request.

And that was just the preliminary phase of the process.

You know what I think about a lot ?

That this is violence. This is a type of violence that does not start with fascism, but I promise you, it's a type of violence that is BOOMING under fascim.
Your neighbor, your colleague, your ex, your abusive ex-parents, will report something about you. You will not have done anything but displease them ; it will just be a way to exert revenge by proxy. But you will suffer. And you will be demonized. And you will have to prove the unprovable.

Considering that I was summoned in January 2021 but my ex-parents' request was sent in the spring of 2020, there was almost A YEAR without me being even involved in a legal proceeding that was very much about me !

To this day I still have PTSD from my apartment being inspected, and my life being dissected for months without being told anything about my rights during this process.

I can't stop thinking about it.
