It's been a pretty shitty instance for a long time hahaha

I just wanted to shout out to all the folks who gave to get me out of a tight spot earlier in the week.

I run pretty lean in general as I figure out how to turn what I do into something sustainable so I can work on my projects full-time. This year has been particularly tough because of the upheavals in the tech industry, but I'm committed to finding a way to make it happen.

I sustain myself with a mix of my Patreon and contract work when I can find it, but consistency has always been a challenge.

I feel like I'm slowly but surely figuring it out, but I do hit snags in the plan here and there and need some help, so it meant a lot to me that so many showed their kindness when I was in a bind.

As most people know, I deal with a lot of nonsense because of the nature of what I do and my politics, but moments like earlier in the week go far in making me believe I'm not wasting my time fighting for a better fedi.

I appreciate yall.

Having lost half a terabyte of music to a failed drive a few years ago (it still hurts), paying five bones to Vox for an additional backup layer is a no-brainer.

And getting Qobuz and SoundCloud integration in their app is pretty fucking sweet.

People asking me why I set the boundaries I set is weird to me.

That's like asking why would I want to keep people who I know won't have respect for me or my living space out of that space.

We all know bad people exist, right?

It's like we're just pretending that at least two SCOTUS judges aren't financially compromised, and another two are underqualified ideologues.

I mean... that's still the case.

I'm actually pretty excited about the future of the fedi.

Yes, we still have significant hurdles to get past. Still, we're slowly but surely starting to figure out the interconnected nature of the challenges in this space and how one solution can cascade to improve the experience for so many more.

Everything we need to make it happen is already here.

It's funny watching a white admin meltdown because they got defederated from another instance.

It's really not that big a deal, and if your behavior improves, it can be rescinded.

But this whole song and dance about how BAD defederation is revolves around a glaring lack of self-reflection and why one felt the need to invoke that tactic.

You're not a victim. You just need to do better. Your inability to see the distinction is probably what got you blocked.

But hey, do you.

Do I always agree with the reasons people have for blocking me? Nah. I think many of them are silly, to be honest.

But that is your right and I will fully support anyone taking steps to make their space safe. Well, except for bigots, for obvious reasons.

It's very clear that the concept of consent and boundaries is a foreign concept to many alleged progressive people in the fedi, especially when it comes to respect for Black and Brown folks.

The fact the basic idea of safety and moderation has been such a hot topic for months now is very telling.

Moderation should be aggressive and ruthless.

Err on the side of caution that reduces the most harm because bigots thrive on being given second chances.
