See people on my timeline being like oh I can just use wood for heating! #solarpunk !
and i'm like, yeeeeaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh, sort of.....
but also, you know that one of the core reasons that the industrial rev was kicked off by mass coal extraction is that it meant peasants could heat their homes with minimal effort and not have to spend like most of their time gathering wood and feeding fires... Right? You know wood is really expensive, takes up a lot of storage, has to be the right kind (dry, seasoned, hard vs soft, specific kinds of tree) and requires you babysit the fire... Right?
and bonus round, when you buy "ready to burn wood" that's been seasoned in a kiln... What do you think powered that kiln?
I did wood (and "heat logs") only the first year on my boat. You will end up burning coal like everyone else. It is cheap, it requires no babysitting, it is hotter, it burns longer, it is energy dense so requires minimal storage space.
like, obviously fuck coal
but until we live in a postcapitalist society where "wood gatherer" and "fire tender" are respected communal tasks and everyone doesn't have to waste all their time on bs jobs?
offgrid means fossil unless you're a millionaire (at which point u can afford someone else to use fossil fuels to make and transport "sustainable" fuels to you), sorry
