First, some historical context:

A violent uprising broke out in Palestine in 1929. Unlike the localized clashes since 1880 when Zionists started settling Palestine, the 1929 violence spread across the whole country.

133 Jews were killed, some in gruesome acts of mob violence. 6 Zionist colonies were entirely destroyed. Even old Jewish communities, which predated Zionism, were attacked in Hebron and Safed. 116 Palestinians were killed by British colonial forces and Zionist militias.

It's no longer some naive dreams from fringe far-right settlers. What the Israeli army is doing in Northern Gaza suggests it will occupy the area much longer after the end of the war and potentially permanently, likely alongside the construction of new settlements.

Musk-funded group targets Muslims & Jews with opposite messages:
- In areas of Michigan with large Muslim populations, the SuperPAC is paints Harris as a close friend of Israel and is suggests she is beholden to the beliefs of her Jewish husband
- In parts of Pennsylvania with large Jewish populations, the ads call Harris antisemitic & say she “support[s] denying Israel the weapons needed to defeat the Hamas terrorists who massacred thousands.”

Israeli human rights group Btselem just published “Welcome to Hell”, a report on the abuse and inhuman treatment of Palestinians in Israeli custody since Oct 7th.

The report reveals the transformation of more than a dozen Israeli prison facilities, military and civilian, into camps dedicated to the abuse of inmates as a matter of policy. Facilities where every inmate is deliberately subjected to harsh, relentless pain and suffering operate as de-facto torture camps.

I spent much of the past week in the village of Burin in the West Bank. Burin is surrounded by three settlements, two military bases, and checkpoints on all main roads.

3 weeks before I arrived, the army had declared one of Burin's farm a closed military zone.

Since the Oslo Accords, the West Bank is split into:
- Area A: covers Palestinian cities. The Palestinian Authority has full control, though the IDF conducts regular raids
- Area B: covers 100s of villages around cities. The PA controls civilian affairs & Israel security
- Area C: covers most of the West Bank’s agricultural land and rural communities.Israel has full control over both civilian and security affairs. This is where Israel builds settlements and where settlers establish outposts

Over the years, Area C became more than a simple administrative district: it has become central to the Israeli far-right narrative on taking over, settling, and judaizing as much land as possible with the objective of fully annexing the territory. Settlers call this the “ battle for area C”.

Burin is a small village on the outskirts of Nablus in the Northern West Bank, full of olive trees & old stone homes.

Most of the village is located within Area B, but the greenhouses of the village's farming co-op are located on the other side of the main road, in Area C.

On the hill just above the greenhouses is the extremist outpost of Yitzhar. The settlers regularly come down to harass and intimidate villagers. These are the settlers who launched a full-fledged pogrom in the neighboring town of Huwara in February 2023:

Since Oct 7th, settlers have regularly occupied the farm, at times firing live bullets on the greenhouses while farmers were inside.

Last month, settlers again attacked. After villagers reached the farm, the Israeli army arrived and declared the farm a "closed military zone."

Closed military zones give the army the right to arrest or kill anyone entering the area & are often used to restrict Palestinian freedom of movement.

These usually last 24 hours but after Oct 7th an emergency law gave the army the right to extend the zones indefinitely.
Palestinians have little recourse and must wait until the closed military zone is lifted, which for farmers means losing access to their fields. Burin farmers were unable to access their greenhouses for three weeks.

To enforce this closed military zone, the Israeli army has on some days occupied the farm from 6 to 9am, the prime farming hours before it gets too hot. The army had also damaged the greenhouses’ irrigation system to make farming impossible.

On Thursday, farmers asked us (solidarity activists) to go to the farm with them, hoping that our presence would deter the settlers & army who would feel less free to mistreat the farmers and so blatantly infringe on their right to work their land.

Bringing us in seems to have worked, at least for the time being: we spent a few hours on the farm (and took advantage of being there to lend a hand to the farmers) and didn't face attack from either settlers or army.

The harvest was destroyed (as expected from 3 weeks without irrigation in the middle of summer). Now, farmers are hoping that the Israeli army will simply let them be. This won't last forever—until the next time settlers target Burin with the support in the Israeli army.

This episode may seem anecdotal: it is just one farm, on one village.

But it is representative of systematic, across-the-board intimidation, harassment, and violence for Palestinians in the West Bank, and especially those who live or work in Area C.
