I was just on a beach vacation and a "baby shark" washed up on shore, causing little children to shriek, and this lady got up from her beach chair, dashed to the shark, grabbed it in her bare hands, threw it back into the water, returned to her chair and picked her book back up and resumed reading. I was deeply impressed at her instant and nonchalant response.
Today my “work” was reporting on the total solar eclipse—such a surreal, spectacular 3+ minutes on the shore of Lake Erie with other umbraphiles…I love huge shared experiences like this
The American Ornithological Society says it will give new English-language names to *all* American birds currently named after people, in an effort to make birding more welcoming for all communities and to focus attention on the birds rather than historical namesakes.
My union, SAG-AFTRA, is striking in Hollywood. It represents 160K movie and TV actors, as well as about 500 staffers at NPR. We journalists are not part of this strike but we support our fellow union workers!!!! ❤️ ❤️
I was never part of a union before coming to NPR but quickly learned the power of colleagues helping each other to be treated fairly at work!!!
The photos of this nuclear-powered cruise ship from the 1960’s are wild—it is like a perfectly preserved time capsule, with atom-themed light fixtures and tableware. A small wooden cube illustrates the amount of uranium fuel needed to circumnavigate the globe over a dozen times.
General science correspondent at NPR…I report on a wide range of subjects such as #astronomy #biology #geology #zoology #NASA #planetaryscience etc plus #diversity in #science and science policy. My print stories appear on NPR.org and audio on All Things Considered and Morning Edition, plus the podcast Short Wave
