Brain scans also revealed decreased cortical thickness in patients on the diet — providing evidence, for the first time, that the improvement in symptoms was linked to measurable changes in the brain.

News Release 25-Sep-2025 While it may go unnoticed, loss of smell may linger for years after COVID-19 Peer-Reviewed Publication NYU Langone Health / NYU Grossman School of Medicine People who suspect that their sense of smell has been dulled after a bout of COVID-19 are likely correct, a new study using an objective, 40-odor test shows. Even those who do not notice any olfactory issues may be impaired. Led by the National Institutes of Health’s RECOVER initiative and supported by its Clinical Science Core at NYU Langone Health, a team of researchers from across the country explored a link between the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 and hyposmia — the reduced ability to smell. The results revealed that 80% of participants who reported a change in their smelling ability after having COVID-19 earned low scores on a clinical scent-detection test taken about two years later. Of this group, 23% were severely impaired or had entirely lost their sense of smell. Notably, 66% of infected participants who did not notice any smelling issues scored abnormally low on the evaluation as well, the authors say. “Our findings confirm that those with a history of COVID-19 may be especially at risk for a weakened sense of smell, an issue that is already underrecognized among the general population,” said study co-lead author Leora Horwitz, MD.

Background: Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a multisystemic disease characterized by exertional intolerance and fatigue which is often accompanied by muscle weakness and fatiguability. A study showed efficacy of the acetylcholinesterase inhibitor pyridostigmine on cardiac output in ME/CFS patients. Pyridostigmine is currently used off-label in ME/CFS and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. Methods: We evaluated the effect of pyridostigmine on hand grip strength in 20 patients with post-infectious ME/CFS. Hand grip strength testing was performed ten times using an electric dynamometer and was repeated after 1 h. In a second test, 30 mg of pyridostigmine was given immediately after the first measurement. Orthostatic function was assessed using a passive standing test. Neurological examination and autoantibody testing were performed to rule out a diagnosis of myasthenia gravis. Results: All patients had reduced maximum hand grip strength with a median of 16.45 kg (IQR: 11.45 kg–22.8 kg). Hand grip strength was diminished by a median of 4.65 kg after 1 h. In contrast, 1 h after pyridostigmine administration, patients showed an improvement in maximum hand grip strength with a median increase of 2.6 kg. The maximum hand grip strength after exertion was about 1.5-fold higher with then without pyridostigmine (p = 0.01).

The Australian E-Health Research Centre (AEHRC) and Monash University have partnered with Emerge Australia to conduct a study seeking to understand the research priorities of people living with, caring for, or treating someone with Long COVID or ME/CFS. Abstract People with Long COVID, myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), and other complex chronic disorders consistently report having difficulty obtaining effective and compassionate medical care and being disbelieved, judged, gaslighted, and even dismissed by healthcare professionals. We believe that these adversarial interactions and language are more likely to arise when healthcare professionals are confronting complex chronic illnesses without proper training, diagnostic biomarkers, or FDA-approved therapies. These problematic conversations between practitioners and patients often involve specific words and phrases—termed the “never-words”—can leave patients in significant emotional distress and negatively impact the clinician–patient relationship and recovery. Seeking to prevent these destructive interactions, we review key literature on best practices for difficult clinical conversations and discuss the application of these practices for people with Long COVID, ME/CFS, dysautonomia, and other complex chronic disorders. We provide recommendations for alternative, preferred phrasing to the never-words, which can enhance therapeutic relationship and chronic illness patient care via compassionate, encouraging, and non-judgmental language.
