8x8 Font Advent Calendar 2025 Day 14

Typewriter

Another lost gem found among the sectors of floppy discs for GEOS this American Typewriter inspired 8x8 oozes character and pushes the pixels to the very boundary of the box.

If you use this one at least an extra pixel or two of vertical space between rows would be advised!

@daviwil thanks David! Hope you are well, been quite the while!

Saucer

4/5 pixel wide gylphs allow 51 characters per line on a Speccy and unlike the 3/4 pixel width can still be readable.

4 pixels can be tricky for glyphs like I, T, W and M and I went for pure clarity with Area51 in 2021.

This time there's an alternate, weird, quirky and different take on getting into 4/5 pixel widths...

Screenshots are rendered here with 8x8 so don't do it justice.

Tanzanite

The Amiga was the first machine I had where fonts were no longer constrained into 8x8 pixels. I played with FED on the Workbench 1.3 extras disk for quite a while!

Here's a small tribute to Garnet, Ruby and Emerald!

Doublewear

Yugoslavian designer Vinko Ožić Pajić produced logo designs using this distinctive lettering for the Standard Konfekcija company in 1963.

While the company went out of business in 2003 type designers Marcus Leis Allion and Jonathan Barnbrook used this as inspiration for their 2006 typeface "Doublethink".

Here's my 8x8 pixel interpretation!

Bomb Jack ZX

Tehkan's 1984 arcade platformer was a banger - instantly easy to get into and fun gameplay that was tricky to master.

While the arcade sported the now-famous Atari arcade font Elite System's 1986 Sinclair Spectrum conversion by Paul Holmes, Andy Williams and Karen Trueman went with a completely custom and rustic font of their own.

Wand

A brand new all-original condensed italic/oblique with a slight curvature and flourishes gives a nice smooth and yet modern feel to anything set it in - even in so few pixels.

ZX Amelia

Stan Davis' 1964 typeface takes inspiration from the magnetic OCR of its time but in a friendly, rounded & bold style.

This 8x8 tiny pixel font reproduction attempts to do it justice!

I've read a lot online about how "Y2K was overblown". As an engineer who worked like crazy in 1999 to correct our systems this drives me crazy.

Today I read about games going offline, watches getting frozen and airline tickets showing the wrong date.

Because of a leap year. Which happens every FOUR years (give or take).

Yeah Y2K was a once every 1000 year issue.

Isn't 2038 going to be fun.

Discworld

Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels are a fantastical comedic romp through a crazy world of heroes, villains and improbable but familiar situations.

The 1995 graphical adventure loosely follows the "Guards, Guards!" book and adorns the game with gorgeous art and voice acting and a small pixel font for us to admire.

Compass

This new font was inspired as being the counterpoint to my Protractor font that featured straight lines and harsh angles and instead takes broad rounded strokes as far as they can be squeezed in!

It comes in regular, bold and heavy weights!

Okay crowd.

What on earth is this machine?

It's not a KayPro 1/2/4, Northstar, TRS-80, Compaq, Osbourne, or Zenith.

Twin 5.25" full-height drives mounted either size of a small CRT. Almost portable form factor but not actually portable.

Some kind of forgotten S-100 clone from the early 80s? Closest seems to be an "Kaycomp II" prototype but still not 100%.

The image on the CRT is superimposed, almost certainly monochrome.

Pirates!

Sid Meier is a legend in the gaming world and his 1987 game Pirates! was quite the jaunt into the Caribbean.

While ported to many systems the Amiga version stood out for its gorgeous small pixel font which is reproduced here for your viewing and download pleasure in the usual crazy number of formats.
