Short Rests restore a limited amount of hitpoints by expending hit dice. They also can restore some spell slots if you're a Wizard or Warlock.

Long Rests restore all hitpoints, your Level/2 hit dice, and all spell slots, but require more uninterrupted time.

When you acquire a potion you will immediately consume it, applying the effects to your character. Higher quality potions are more expensive, but have more significant effects. Potions can only be obtained by finding traders (not shopkeepers) or treasure chests.
