Some situations may call for you to make a decision whether to attack first or wait to investigate. If you attack first against an enemy, they will be surprised and skip their first combat turn. If you misplace your trust, you risk losing your first combat turn instead.

Mistakenly attacking a non-enemy will often lead to less than desirable outcomes as well.

Spells typically have a flat damage roll depending on level. Spells that use spell slots usually can also be cast using a higher level spell slot than the spell itself, increasing its damage. Some spells may instead increase in damage based on character level. A few spells will also add your spell casting ability modifier to the damage.

If the spell's level spell slot is available, it will use it. Otherwise, it will use a higher level spell slot if available.

Mixed attacks are attacks with 2 weapons where one is melee and another is ranged. Only one attack may gain the ability modifier for damage, unless the modifier is negative. The attack that is not disadvantaged gains the modifier.

Some monsters are Resistant, Immune, or Vulnerable to certain damage types.

Resistant: the monster takes half damage from the attack
Immune: the monster takes 1 damage from the attack
Vulnerable: the monster takes double damage from the attack

Encounters begin with an "Initiative" roll, where each creature in combat rolls a Dexterity (Dex) check. For the remainder of the encounter, creatures will attack in order of their Initiative, from highest to lowest.
