Today's temperature was slightly lower across !SoCal. Trio didn't grumble about how hot it is in Palm Springs today, and it is not awful.

The house stayed warm, however. I think the indoor minimum was about 88⁰F / 31⁰C.

  How This Woman Turned Arizona's Desert into a Farmland Oasis
  
  Southern Arizona is known for its desert climate, with very hot summers and mild winters. This climate has meant the region has been a hub for agricultural growth for thousands of years despite the fact rainfall has always been relatively low. It's Arizona's rivers and aquifers that hold groundwater which have supported the state’s now $23 billion agriculture industry. In terms of revenue generated, Arizona's top five agricultural products are cattle, calves, lettuce, dairy products, cotton, and hay. In total, farmland makes up about 35% of the state of Arizona. Farming in the desert has been a challenge for Arizona’s modern farmers, who grow water-intensive crops like cotton, alfalfa and corn for cows. It's estimated that these farms use nearly three-quarters of the available water supply to irrigate their crops. The Colorado River system, which supplies 36 percent of Arizona's total water use has experienced extensive drought conditions for the past 19 years. This has resulted in Lake Mead dropping to historically low reservoir levels. More than one-third of Arizona’s water flows up the Colorado River to Lake Mead. This year an intensifying drought and declining reservoir levels across the Western United States has prompted the first-ever water supply cuts to Arizona farmers. Extensive droughts and dwindling water supplies have wreaked havoc on the once prosperous farms that could endure the arid conditions. Arizona has also become one the fastest growing states in the last decade, as result there has been a demand for tree lined neighborhoods, golf courses and lawns, all of which require vast amounts of water. As we keep consuming the ancient groundwater, without it being replenished, water tables drop and rivers start to dry up. However over the last 30 years Arizona has been turning this around, in this video we will show you how a low cost innovative water retention system is being used in the desert, turning the dry landscape into a fertile carbon sink stretching over 100,000 acres and we will show you how this system is recharging the aquifers, by improving water retention by at least 28% which has helped to increase biodiversity, turning the desert back into a farmland oasis. I think all the North American deserts are rain-shadow deserts. By this I mean that in the direction of the prevailing winds, there are mountain ranges that parallel the coastline. Most of the moisture is squeezed out of the air by going over the mountains ⛰️ leaving large areas where the annual evaporation exceeds the annual rainfall.

This is exacerbated by the fact that the oceanic currents West of us are relatively cold. They don’t add as much moisture to the atmosphere as warm currents do.

There are several different deserts 🏜️, which can be divided along elevation, geology, precipitation, other climate measures, and by the biological organisms that live there. So for instance, the #High_Desert and #Intermediate_Desert ares of !SoCal have specific plants 🌱 and animals that live there. The #Low_Desert consist of multiple sub deserts with different climates and life forms. These deserts are generally located at lower elevations as well as being to the south of the other deserts. Most of the Low Deserts are subsets of the Sonoran Desert.

The !SoCal #High_Desert (elevation 3000 feet and higher) and #Intermediate_Desert (below 3000 feet, but still higher and more northerly than the low deserts), which are portions of the #Mojave_Desert, are expecting peak temperatures of 100⁰F / 38⁰C and up, while the #Low_Desert (including the Colorado Desert, Sonoran Desert, and a couple of other smaller deserts) are expecting 110⁰F / 43⁰C and up.

Excessive heat warnings issued across much of desert areas of #CA, #NV, #AZ. Stay out of the heat as much as possible.

I saw a video where they said that California #SR39 is discontinuous, with a 22 mile long interruption. Since I used to bicycle down that road with friends, I knew I'd seen highway signs along the route, including in the interrupted section.

An expert discusses the water use issues in the Colorado River basin. I'm glad to hear him note that MWD (supplier to most of urban and suburban !SoCal) is not the biggest issue. Agricultural areas in deserts like the Imperial and Coachella valleys are the biggest problem.

In California, agriculture uses 90% of the water, industry uses 8-9%, and residential use is 1-2%.
