The New Joule Order, a report this week by the Carlyle Group, argues that large parts of the world are about to decarbonise at breakneck speed for reasons that have nothing to do with net zero. Between 1st July 2023 and the end of April 2024, Uruguay generated all of its electricity from hydro, wind, bioenergy and solar.

Hydroelectric plants comprised 42.9% of the total mix, followed closely by wind farms at 40.6%. Bioenergy (12.9%) and solar (3.5%) accounted for the remainder.
