"When tornados recently swept through Missouri and Tennessee and Kentucky, there were a few reports about local NWS office staffing shortages. The reports were explained away the next day by Caroline Leavitt at the White House saying that the cuts had not affected 'overnight' staffing at local offices."

David Pepper warns that something's getting lost in the conversation about Texas and Trump administration cuts to NWS and NOAA, and that something that's getting lost "invites tragedy and loss in the long term."

    As he says,

"There is no doubt there have been cuts to the overall workforce and capacity of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Weather Service, along with a downgrading of FEMA."

As Ron Filipkowski says today, he and Meidas took a great deal of heat yesterday for connecting the Trump administration's steep cuts in weather-forecasting services to the unfolding tragedy in Texas.

He notes that immediately his inbox began to fill with DMs from trolls who were outraged at the suggestion that cuts made by Trump's administration could have played a role in lack of preparedness for a flash flood.

He also foresaw — correctly — that Trump defenders would try to flood social media with diversionary narratives about how anyone but the Trump administration bore primary responsibility for the lack of preparedness. Texas officials, local authorities: you name it.

I saw this same dynamic in my own feed here, and I pushed back against it, because I knew that this defensive tactic was designed to muddy the waters and exonerate Trump and his cuts.

Certainly it's entirely within the realm of possibility that Texas officials played a role in not preparing for disaster. But to recognize this must not be to ignore the dangerous effect of steep cuts in our weather preparedness systems — cuts coming directly from the Trump administration.

Staff members in those positions are meant to work with local emergency managers to plan for floods, including when and how to warn local residents and help them evacuate."
