The #ArtOfReconciliation is a 2-month program that takes place virtually and on the traditional territory of the #lək̓ʷəŋən People (
- #Songhees and #Esquimalt Nations) and the #WSÁNEĆ #FirstNations.

The Art of Reconciliation project explores how young adults feel about #reconciliation and helps them express those feelings through #art. Some of that #artwork will be created for the general public to interact with and possibly inspire them to reflect on their own feelings about reconciliation as only art can do.

Benefits to Participants:
$250 #honorarium provided for the completion of the program and participation in the documentation.

Work with skilled #Indigenous & non-Indigenous #mentors and #teachers.

Receive valuable #training about #ArtMaking, reconciliation and #IndigenousJustice.

Showcase artwork at a public art exhibit.

Receive a #certificate of completion and be publicly recognized for your contributions to the program.

This opportunity would be an asset to #YoungAdults considering a career in #SocialJustice, #diversity and #inclusion, ArtsAndCulture, #IndigenousLeadership and/or #education.

All cultural backgrounds are welcome. Participants will be selected to ensure equal representation. Organizers will take extra care to reach out to communities who tend to be underrepresented through our participating partner organizations. Participation is limited to ages 18-29, living in the #CRD and Greater #VictoriaBC area.

Program sessions start September 15th and will take place in person and over zoom, see detailed schedule below. Final art works are due November 4th for a show at the #VictoriaArtsCouncil main gallery on Store Street and will be on display until November 27th.

There are around 370 million indigenous people in the world, making up less than 5% of the world's population, but accounting for 15% of the poorest.

After a 3 year investigation, the federal government has acknowledged that it invested $23.3B (adjusted) on a boarding school system to break up #Indigenous families and communities, and destroy language and culture.

The report suggests that the US should invest that same amount of money in family reunification, language revitalization, and Indian education to help repair the havoc wreaked by 400 schools from 1871 to 1969, which killed at least 973 children.

Iron Gate Dam is now under demolition on the Klamath River in Northern #California.

Kamala Harris's record on #Indigenous issues is mixed.

As the #California AG she opposed tribal applications to put land into trust, and argued a case against the Big Lagoon Rancheria which could've opened past land-to-trust transfers across Indian Country to litigation. Then she pivoted, and during her 2020 presidential campaign she promised to assist tribes in restoring their lands. She also created the first #ICWA Compliance Task Force to protect Native kids.
