@Tutanota another #debian user here. Honestly for packaging the choices could be "Debian-based", Redhat based, Arch based, Suse based. Then of course other to consider solus, nixos, slack, etc

To me, the test of whether my #linux laptop daily driver is actually useful is when I have to do some real world shit that I don't control. Today I had a virtual doctor appointment using some online video website that my doctor's office uses. Sure, the site whines that #Firefox on #Linux is not the "preferred browser", but it worked fine. Audio, video, all of it. My doctor had no idea and I had no excuses to make about struggling to connect. Score one more victory for the linux laptop. I've been daily driving #Debian since June or so and I have no regrets.

It's been at least five years since I last had a non-hardware-failure failure to boot in #Debian. It might be closer to a decade.

I have also not used #grml for a year or three.

But today I needed to and @grmlproject is simply one of the best sets of software ever assembled.

Any time I have a major issue, it just sits there in my desk drawer, waiting to help. It's awesome.

I should probably upgrade the age-old version I have on this stick though :p

Leading to this proposal last week to require SSE2 instructions for 32-bit x86 Rust.

If that passes, Debian would not be able to package Rust on 32-bit x86, though the next stable release of Debian won't have a 32-bit kernel so arguably it would be no loss to say "all Rust is 64-bit on x86 from now."

@bugaevc yeah! It took me quite a while to figure out a nice way to use gcc-14 for the Hurd while keeping the default (currently at gcc-11), avoiding a world rebuild (and probably worse, many subsequent package breakages that would need to be addressed).

It also took some time to figure out why my cross-built executables kept segfaulting, in the end just some tags were missing from upstream (and I hadn't carefully looked at which versions #debian was using).

Also, even the 20240825 debian image does not boot with qemu-8.2.2 for me.

Very thankful for all the kind help that I got, again!
