A new security vulnerability was found when combining #Chromium browsers with virtually all modern GPUs (Intel, Apple, Nvidia, AMD and ARM).
Neither #Google nor any of the mentioned vendors are planning on fixing it.
https://arstechnica.com/security/2023/09/gpus-from-all-major-suppliers-are-vulnerable-to-new-pixel-stealing-attack/#Mastodon, by the way, isn't vulnerable to this attack, thanks to having the `X-Frame-Options` and `Content-Security-Policy` headers. Many other fedi platforms however, including #Pixelfed, #Firefish and #Writefreely don't have them, at least when I tested.

I know people complain about @Vivaldi being not fully open and being based on #Chromium, but you just can't beat #Vivaldi when it comes to features. I read a lot on the Internet, but sometimes I just don't have the time to do it right now. Vivaldi has an integrated #ReadingList which I can just add my current page to with relative ease. To make it easier, I created a #CommandChain to add the current tab to the Reading List and then close it. I put that chain on my toolbar with a custom icon.

A list of recent hostile moves by #Google's #Chrome team; handy for sharing with your entourage, to explain why they should stop using #Chromium / #GoogleChrome and use #Firefox or #Epiphany as their main #web #browser :
* The "Manifest v3" sabotage of content blocking extensions: https://www.theverge.com/2022/6/10/23131029/mozilla-ad-blocking-firefox-google-chrome-privacy-manifest-v3-web-request
* The attempted sabotage of #JPEGXL: https://www.cnet.com/tech/computing/chrome-banishes-jpeg-xl-photo-format-that-could-save-phone-space/
* #WebEnvironmentIntegrity a.k.a. #DRM for whole websites would hurt the web, #opensource browsers and OSes: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/07/googles-web-integrity-api-sounds-like-drm-for-the-web/In conversation from mastodon.social permalink Attachments

I've been happily using #GrapheneOS for months now, very impressed.
They maintain #Vanadium, a hardened #Chromium fork. Sadly both lack the option to put search at the bottom, year old feature request:
https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=1284380
Big shout out to #DivestOS team for creating the attached comparison tables! Seems like #bromite and #brave are most all-round secure & private mobile browsers.

New blog post, this time in v8.dev! https://v8.dev/blog/speeding-up-v8-heap-snapshots
There, I break down several optimizations in heap snapshot that I landed in V8. The improvements generating the heap snapshots are over 50%. But, for minified code, it can be over 90%! 🚀.
This work is part of the collaboration between @igalia and Bloomberg ❤️
This post is also a continuation of the previous one about #V8 memory profiling for #Chromium and #Node.js https://blogs.igalia.com/dape/2023/05/18/javascript-memory-profiling-with-heap-snapshot/

Chromium still has some problems with automated end-to-end tests on Linux Wayland - for example, not being able to control window size and position without user interaction breaks some tab dragging tests that need two windows of a given size to be right next to each other.
We're already working around other limitations with a custom test protocol extension, but in this case, it seems easier to just emulate the user interaction needed to move and resize the windows! It's not as trivial as it might seem, mostly due to client-side decorations messing up the window bounds calculations, but I managed to get a first prototype working 😄
