    There's a potential firmware backdoor in 271 models of Gigabyte motherboards.

    It's not as nasty as it sounds, though it's not good: The BIOS checks for firmware updates to give you a download alert in Windows, but it doesn't check that the site it connects to is Gigabyte's actual download site. So if someone can compromise your DNS to point you at a fake download site, it will happily prompt you to download and install a fake BIOS release.

    So... Don't take your desktop computer to a cafe and connect it to untrusted wifi. Or turn off the updater. That would work great too.

    A month ago I was still wondering if it was an April Fool's prank, and now it's (almost) here: The Asus ROG Ally.

    This is a handheld gaming PC, like the Steam Deck or a bigger and more expensive Nintendo Switch. It has a Ryzen Z1 or Z1 Extreme (a variant of the laptop 7840U chip), 16GB of RAM, 512GB of storage, and a seven inch 1080p screen.

    The new CPU is about twice as fast as the one in the Steam Deck, but because the display resolution is also roughly doubled - two million pixels vs. one million on the Steam Deck - game performance on default settings is typically a little slower.

    Oh, and it runs Windows, where the Steam Deck runs Linux with neat emulation that works with almost all Windows games.

    Impressive piece of technology, but the battery life isn't there yet.

    Price is $599 compared to $549 for a comparable Steam Deck, which is pretty good for the more powerful hardware

    In 1212 a Jewish convert Christian monk called Robert of London tried to trick King John I of England into converting to Islam in exchange for an alliance with al-Nasir of Moorish Spain.

    Robert led a mission to Spain seeking an alliance between England and the Moors to regain England's lost lands in France. At the meeting, Robert offered the conversion of King John and the English for the alliance.

    Being a faithful Jew, Robert told al-Nasir that John I was a tyrant and failure. Robert got a reward for his honesty, and the rest of the English delegation got nothing. When he returned, Robert showed his rewards to John as proof of the productive conversation with al-Nasir. For which John rewarded him with even more riches and the position of Abbot of St Albans.

    Of course, that failed when the Iberian Crusaders killed al-Nasir a year later.

    Robert went on to embezzle money and was kicked out of the Holy Order.
