a cynics guide to free software
the fsf does not promote freedom, it promotes old talking points. while some of those talking points are still relevant, much that is relevant and important goes ignored. this includes rights for trans developers, which the fsf has done an abysmal job of standing up for.the fsf does not "fight" for anything. they do not only lose- they are also avoidant of problems. this avoidance has lost them viability and stature.with that said, this account is about a movement, the fsf is simply where it started.open source is not about freedom either. osi co-founder bruce perens resigned after only one year, saying osi/open source had unfairly "overshadowed" free software.open source has always been a rallying cry for the corporate exploitation of free software and its authors. there are many alternatives if you dont want to call it "free software", but "open source" is for co-opting what at least used to be a movement.
