@sun @HWABAG I can ask a Mexican. Look up their blog page for recipes, buy their books which are in English. Not impossible!

@sun @HWABAG I hope everyone can agree that they don't want the criminals of other countries too. We let in too many would-be terrorists, murderers, rapists, drug dealers and thieves in. The systems cannot keep up with this load.

@lanodan @rin He needs to put his shirt down. No one wants to see that and it'll make him seem less of a creep.

That's not true. I have plenty of good and smart conversations on fedi. You probably aren't going to get them polling about people's sexuality though.
It is all about how you conduct yourself and what you talk about. How you steer the conversation. If you get defensive and insult people then you derail this as much as it is derailed when they do this.

I would love to learn how to make learning more addictive than my use of social media.
But that might mean making it a socialised activity and there aren't many people to do this with. It's difficult to find those interested in the same subjects to learn.

@iceloops @LukeAlmighty @beardalaxy Read back through the conversation later with an objective mind and level head. There were opportunities to notice what Luke was doing in critiquing your choices with humour and you could laugh along with it. Or ignore it after explaining your thoughts if that is what you wanted to do. Before it escalated into insults.

@iceloops @LukeAlmighty @beardalaxy Calling them dumb doesn't mean what I said. They do not come across as dumb to me but articulate. You can have good conversations with them, if you know how to steer the conversation in your favour and learn to accept their opinions on things.
You could have had a nice conversation about why you thought it was important to separate the gay and lesbian categories and then accepted that Luke thought you should have separated other categories along the same lines. That it is something to consider in future when you have other polls.

@iceloops @LukeAlmighty @beardalaxy I feel second-hand embarrassment having read this entire thread. What is going on?

@iceloops @LukeAlmighty @beardalaxy It's not about breaking rules. There are better ways to show people to not mess with you and that is by not giving them a chance to. It is about how you conduct yourself. You don't have to explain yourself where it isn't relevant to the thread. That just derails it.

@iceloops @LukeAlmighty @beardalaxy This is not about them being dumb, this is just entertainment to them. Oversharing and replying gives this more ammunition. I think you'd feel better if you didn't give it any thought because it isn't worth more than to acknowledge that this is entertainment to them. It's not worth getting defensive over, it's not worth insulting back. Focus your attention instead on the people that don't do this to you and learning how to have good conversations with others.

"The first verifiable record of the diamond comes from a history by Muhammad Kazim Marvi of the 1740s invasion of Northern India by Nader Shah. Marvi notes the Koh-i-Noor as one of many stones on the Mughal Peacock Throne that Nader looted from Delhi. The diamond then changed hands between various empires in south and west Asia, until being given to Queen Victoria after the Second Anglo-Sikh War and the British East India Company's annexation of the Punjab in 1849, during the reign of the then 11-year-old Maharaja of the Sikh Empire, Duleep Singh."
This diamond has changed hands so many times that it makes me wonder who it really belongs to.

In some ways, I'm glad that I decided to start over on here. I wasn't very happy with my old experience of fedi. I'm still not sure that I have the right balance.
