A debate between a skilled prosecutor and a common criminal is not a fair fight🤷🏿♂️

The US criminal justice system has laws in place to prevent a person from being forced to testify against themselves. This is in large part to prevent the situation where a prosecutor has the defendant in the witness box. Because good prosecutors are expert at using wordplay and psychological manipulation to evoke an emotional response. That emotional response can lead to self-incrimination and influences the jury.

VP Harris on Trump inciting the January 6th insurrection: “The former president has been indicted and impeached for exactly that reason. But this is not an isolated situation.”
