as a Slovak, I'm naturally a fan of Austria-Hungary and I'd like to keep thinking that if the 19th century Hungarian nationalists (liberals) were kept in check and the entire thing was gradually transformed into a federation, just as Franz Ferdinand wanted, it would have worked out for longer. truth be told, this increasingly feels like a pipe dream and of course there's no way back to that country, which kind of renders the entire point moot. I don't know how much to trust Hitler about this but given how in Mein Kampf described the empire he was born in, the sheer diversity of languages made it really disfunctional compared to other more modern states

what I will definitely grant him though, is that I see almost no reason why Austria shouldn't be joined with Germany. if we're consistent with the modern nationalist principle, and consider the "diversity" (for the lack of a better world) that is (was?) already in Germany, then Austria should definitely be a part of it. I know very well that this got enshrined at Versailles - and after WWII as well - with the intent to humiliate and weaken Germany and it feels very unjust, but alas, we live in this timeline

@teto not sure what you mean by puppet states, it was all one realm, and I honestly don't know much about germanization but it's possible that they went too far, especially in Bohemia. here it was mostly magyarization, it was probably one or the other depending on if you were in Austria- or -Hungary

maybe if they stuck to Latin... but that's another pipe dream :thounking:

@teto yeah the German ethnic strife barely missed us geographically. as far as I know we had some Germans mostly in Bratislava/Pressburg and Spiš/Zips but they just... chilled

@teto you know the official language used to be Latin before that, right?
granted, I don't know how extensively that was followed. the common peasant probably didn't understand shit, it was mostly for administration
