The lesson of the XMPP story is that the community shouldn't get complacent just because a big corp is now backing them, support their own smaller #FOSS developers through any means they can (whether financial or code), put out a unique thing every now and then, and make sure the UX is not horrible for new users. I think #Misskey, #Sharkey, and #Catodon got those lessons right (especially the very latter, UX was really horrible in XMPP back then and I think that's what "killed" it if you can even call it that). Not sure about #Mastodon though. Maybe that's what why almost all of the worry I'm hearing about #Threads comes predominantly from Mastodon and Mastodon-compatible (in the sense they try to be as compatible with Masto as possible in terms of API) instances. :seija_coffee:
@allison@hidamari.apartments Maribel Hearn has a list of WRs in https://maribelhearn.com/wr though doesn't seem to account for slowdown apparently. I remember some scoreboards requiring your slowdown to be within an accepted range but admittedly I only remember that for some Windows games like TH07 and TH08. :sagume_think:
But very nice to see you improve your skills in #Touhou! Must be nice to be able to play it with score in mind instead of survival :munch_rainbowoverlay:
Anyway I wonder if anything can be done about the slowdown. 20%+ seems pretty bad, and if you're aiming for competitive scoring I think you need your slowdown to be less than 10% or even 5% or else the scoreboards wouldn't accept it (some even consider more than 1% or 2% to be excessive!)... Is the #Epson's processor upgradable? :thinking_cirno:
@anonicus@shitposter.club The only good thing with WebP is their lossless compression and to achieve that they had to abandon the lossy VP8 codec and develop a whole new lossless codec for it which is very lol :kyou:
Ultimately nobody seem to even care about its lossless (which is pretty sad because it's actually better than AVIF's lossless) because if you're gonna do that you might as well go PNG anyway and not care about the filesize bloat for the sake of compatibility :cirnoShrug:
@anonicus@shitposter.club I think #JPEG / #PNG / #GIF are still here to stay for a very long time, but #JPEGXL is a pretty good storage format for all the JPEGs (which can be converted completely losslessly and reversibly bit-by-bit) and I'd rather have a slow but steady transition with JPEG XL than yet another #WebP situation with #AVIF where the smartasses realize their #compression is not good enough because surprise surprise, video compression is a way different field than real static #image compression like JPEG and PNG do :seija_coffee:
