The earliest depictions of a repeating, geometric pattern of waves can be seen on ancient Chinese maps, where they were used to denote the sea.

Japan would later borrow this design, creating a motif that remains popular to this day.

😇THE 1200 STONE DISCIPLES😇

At the foot of Mt Atago (愛宕山) is the small temple of Otagi Nenbutsu-ji (愛宕念仏寺).

Although it has a history stretching back over 1000 years, the temple might have faded away to nothing were it not for the creation of 1200 statues.

As rainy season deepens lotus plants emerge from the muddy beds of ponds, reaching above the waters to unfurl giant leaves.
In a few short weeks alien landscapes appear where once there were only bare stretches of water.

In Kyōto 'kanrensetsu' (観蓮節), 'lotus flower viewing', coincides with the culmination of the Gion Matsuri...almost as if the flowers have appeared to welcome the gods of Yasaka-jinja into the city.

Shortly before the mid-point of the year giant rings of reed begin appearing in shrine precincts across Kyōto.

'Chinowa' (茅の輪) are sacred portals, washing off the impurities gathered over the last six months and offering protection for the next six😇

🥤THE SOLSTICE🌞

'Geshi' (夏至), the 'summer solstice', marks a period of purification in Japan.

Now that the first half of the year has passed thanks are given, and prayers made that the second half (beginning with fiercely hot months) will be healthy and misfortune free.

🌧️'THE PLUM RAIN'☔️

June heralds the rainy season in Japan. Known as 'Tsuyu' (梅雨), the 'Plum Rain', this period coincides with the plums ripening.

The damp weeks are marked by their dazzling greenery and the appearance of the celebrated hydrangea.

🙏'MONKS THAT MAKE THE DAY SHINE'🌞

'Tsuyu' (梅雨) is a verdant, muggy and unpredictable time of year. It doesn't rain every day, but the season always seems to drag on.

When the rain simply gets too much, it's time to bring out the ghost-like 'Teru teru bōzu' (てるてる坊主).

'Teru teru bōzu' (てるてる坊主 'shine shine monk') are simple dolls hung outside windows as a prayer for dry weather or an end to rain.
Originally used by farming communities, in the Edo period this tradition spread to towns and cities.

Originally home to an artistic community that flourished in the 17th, the narrow valley was much later purchased by one of Japan's leading collectors of obi (帯-kimono sashes), who envisioned constructing a textile museum here.

Aman Kyōto (アマン京都) is a luxury resort that shares its forested slopes with Kinkaku-ji (金閣寺), the 'Golden Pavilion'.

We were fortunate enough to be invited to explore its historical grounds...a wonderland of moss, and rocks worthy of a castle keep.

Ikenobō (池坊) is the oldest and largest school of ikebana, founded right here in Kyōto in the 15thC by the Buddhist monk Sennō Kuden (池坊専応口伝).

Sennō lived at Rokkaku-dō (六角堂) and named his school after the monks' quarters that stood beside the temple pond.

Ikebana (生け花) is the Japanese art of flower arranging, literally 'bringing flowers to life'. Beginning as Buddhist floral offerings, over time flower arrangement grew into an artistic pursuit. Nowadays there are over 1000 schools of Ikebana all over the world.
