Bernie (codewiz@mstdn.io)'s status on Tuesday, 10-Sep-2024 13:22:29 JST Bernie @thomasfuchs Yes, but is it fair to compare an LLM costing $20 per month with a human professional who would ask at least $30 for a similar job?
Just yesterday I asked GPT4o to read a lease in Japanese and warn me of any clauses I should watch out for. It did so in 30 seconds.
Then I asked it to compare the new lease with one from 5 years ago, and 30 seconds later I had a bullet list of differences.

Bernie (codewiz@mstdn.io)'s status on Monday, 15-Jul-2024 06:52:51 JST Bernie Kudos to Lucas Rooyakkers for coming to #HOPE with a specially crafted slide that (sort of) hacked the projector 😂
We flicked back and forth, and found 2 slides in his deck that would consistently trigger this.
His talk on chaos Chaos and Undetectable Communications was also super interesting:

Bernie (codewiz@mstdn.io)'s status on Monday, 15-Jul-2024 06:52:50 JST Bernie I don't know enough of HDMI signal encoding to explain this, but PAL and NTSC had horizontal and vertical sync pulses which were slightly outside the range of the analog luma and chroma signals.
Certain high-contrast patterns at maximum intensity could wildly distort the image on early CRTs.

Bernie (codewiz@mstdn.io)'s status on Monday, 06-May-2024 14:43:26 JST Bernie @nowherefast Correct or not, we should accept that most people will say AI and ML interchangeably. Interrupting them to point out that it's incorrect will make us sound like picky nerds, and derail the conversation from more crucial topics, such as:
* How do we design, train and fine-tune free and open models?
* Who will cover the huge infrastructure costs?
* Can we realistically match or exceed the capabilities of existing proprietary models?
...and many more.

Bernie (codewiz@mstdn.io)'s status on Monday, 06-May-2024 05:25:58 JST Bernie Stallman intervened in the Q&A section of "AI in a Closed World", objecting to the term Artificial Intelligence
After a lengthy discussion, RMS said he'd rather call it "Machine Learning."
And there we are, once again reducing a technological revolution to a petty lexicological argument, just like the "Free Software" vs "Open Source Software" flamewars 20 years ago 🤦♀️

Bernie (codewiz@mstdn.io)'s status on Friday, 29-Mar-2024 23:58:23 JST Bernie The #C64 has 8 hardware sprites. You can play with them with a few POKEs:
rem turn on all 8 sprites
poke 53269,255rem set sprite 0 x and y pos
poke 53248,50
poke 53249,60(lowercase so you can directly paste into VICE)

Bernie (codewiz@mstdn.io)'s status on Friday, 29-Mar-2024 23:58:22 JST Bernie So far, we did not change the sprite pointers, so we're viewing raw memory, specifically addresses 0 to 63.
Page 0 holds various system variables, so the sprite will flicker as interrupts and basic routines write to it.
This will move the sprite 0 data pointer to the address range 64-127 ($40-$7F):
poke 2040,1
Blocks 2 ($80-BF) and 3 ($C0-FF) contain more interesting stuff: timer counters and variables that change when you move around the cursor.

Bernie (codewiz@mstdn.io)'s status on Friday, 29-Mar-2024 23:58:22 JST Bernie This will change sprite 0 color to yellow:
poke 53287,7
There are 16 colors from 0 to 15. Sprites can also be displayed in multicolor mode (4 colors), but currently we're in high-res mode.
