1. This image shows ripe cheese wheels, inspected and ready for export to the world. On a recent trip to Modena, Italy I toured a production facility where Parmigiano Reggiano cheese is made. Using just three ingredients; milk, salt and rennet, and eight centuries of cheese making experience, cheese artisans in Italy craft what is reverently known around the world as the King Of Cheese. It is hard to describe the visual impact made by rows and rows of of 600-liter cheese wheels, in varying shades of white to creamy brown, stacked high on wooden pallets in a large, dark room. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the area. Parmigiano Reggiano is a true reflection of its place of origin and the art of generations of cheese artisans. Produced exclusively in the provinces of Parma, Reggio Emilia, Modena and parts of the provinces of Mantua and Bologna. After the cheese is formed, marked and salted, the wheels, each containing 600 liters of milk, are stacked on long rows of wooden pallets in silent maturation rooms. The cheese are allowed to rest in these room for a full twelve months before being judged for quality. Examining each cheese wheel, one-by-one, experts determine which wheels will continue to age for another 6 months to become what we know a Parmigiano Reggiano "Extra" or "Export" and which will be sold locally as "fresh" or Mezzano.

The lichen in this photo is called Parmelia Sulcata, and it grows as thin and flaky patches that hug the bark of the tree tightly. Common names for this lichen are waxpaper lichen, net-marked Parmelia, shield lichen or hammered crottle. In addition to being beautiful, lichen is not destructive to the trees it grows on and provides food for wildlife.

1. The Latimeria gate located near the pinetum on the grounds of Winterthur Museum and Gardens. The gate was introduced to the property in 1929 after it was purchased by Henry Francis duPont from the historic Latimeria estate in Wilmington, Delaware. Considered one of the oldest follies on the museum grounds, the gate serves as architectural whimsy and framing to the peony garden. A white garden gate stands open, invitingly leading into a lush green garden with a pathway that disappears into the shade of overhanging trees. Neatly trimmed hedges flank the gate, and the tranquility of the scene suggests a serene escape into nature.
