This recording by Glenn Gould of the Brahms Ballades and Rhapsodies are my favourite. Usually I'm not that much into Gould as I find his Bach interpretations mostly mincing and boring (with exceptions here and then). But his interpretations of these Barahms pieces accompany me since I was a teen. Wonderful. Bringing Brahms in the proximity to Ravel, Debussy, even Satie.

What a surprise. In contrast to the versions conducted e.g. by Bernstein (pungent) or Solti (solemn) this one is nimble like a dance. Never heard it that way, without its usual (and in a sense, typical) severity. Lovely.

I'm very fond of John Elliott's early work (like this one) which shows him to be an exceptional musician and composer. His later work leaning into "folk chamber music with a drum kit" is not of my taste as it concentrates on sounds and atmospheric rather than on musical structure, melody, harmonies. But this song here, just fabulous.
