I think treating political opinions as a spectrum from left to right (or even authoritarian to libertarian) is kind of bad because it sort of treats all political positions as equally valid and worthy of consideration

like having a right wing to balance out the left wing is simply an inevitability and that people with "centrist" positions are simply a happy medium of the two and not a specific ideology in its own right

I think if anything a more useful spectrum would be between status quo and radical and then just thinking of different ideologies or tendencies as something someone aligns more or less closely with
