The older I get the more I understand that it is my obligation as old person not to understand the young people. Not just to not intrude pn their privacy, their subjectivity, their inner spaces, but to not understand. To keep them safe from the past that is still present by living within me, so that they can have the future that is beyond my grasp (and should be so). "Understanding" is an awful thing, and it can, at times, be tantamount to pollution and sacrilege.
