"turn the other cheek" is one of those things I keep coming back to. The point is for you to not be quick to anger. You are not supposed to eschew anger because a) you will not use righteous anger and b) some people only respond to anger.

So if you simply don't let the first insult make a reaction, you know when the person continues, it wasn't a mistake.
