Because the USD is still the global reserve currency, money is going to be invested in our government bonds (short to long term and everything in between, bonds are just "loans") which keeps them in demand, and the fact that American businesses trade in USD backed by the same government that handles all the bonds that everyone is into means that it will boom and bust but ultimately continue to go up over time even (and especially) when things feel shitty like we're all a paycheck away from the poorhouse.
