To ascribe to capitalist meritocracy you have to believe that people of ability and talent will rise to the top even from humble beginnings, while those who fall to the wayside either didn't work hard enough or just weren't exceptional enough to make it. This helps justify to older generations leaving their children nothing or doing little to help them, since they're just expected to be able to succeed and achieve greatness solely through their own abilities.
