I had one client who had an entire solar system installed only to discover that the contractor wasn't licensed. In his case it was actually good, because he hadn't paid yet, and california law prohibits an unlicensed contractor from collecting any money whatsoever or otherwise recovering from the client, i.e. my client got free panels and storage.
