@mk gluster does somewhat require a tuned filesystem if i recall. it seems the meta is to graduate to ceph once that stops working.

ceph has much more of a penance to get going but one of the reasons it insists on owning the block device is because not having to fight a filesystem makes it easier to do the things they need it to do at massive scale.
